Mission-Critical Space Components

Oberg provides specialized space hardware machining for the industry’s most demanding applications. From deep-space exploration to LEO constellations, we manufacture space parts and components to customer print specifications.

Rocket and Spacecraft Hardware

Our core capabilities cover the full spectrum of rocket and spacecraft hardware, supporting tight tolerances and controlled processes.

  • Rocket Propulsion Components: We produce precision-machined housings, injector components, and structural interfaces where extreme pressure and temperatures are critical factors.
  • Fuel System Fittings and Flow-Critical Components: From customer prints and specifications, we manufacture precision-machined fittings and flow-critical components for demanding cryogenic and high-pressure applications.
  • Landing System Components: We manufacture structural elements and precision interfaces to customer specifications for applications involving high loads, impact forces, and repeated stress cycles.
  • Satellite Components and Support Hardware: We manufacture satellite frames and structural assemblies, including components with lightweight, high-strength geometries.
  • Precision Interfaces and Mating Features: Our satellite component machining, to your exact drawing specifications, provides alignment, flatness, and tolerance stack-up.
  • Ground Support Hardware & Precision Tooling: We deliver rugged ground support hardware, precision tooling, and support components for demanding, high-stakes assemblies.

Advanced Thermal Management & Optics

Our facility leverages advanced 5-axis machining to manufacture intricate thermal management components and optics housings for demanding thermal environments.

  • Complex Thermal Components: Utilizing 5-axis machining for deep pocketing and thin-wall geometries specified for demanding thermal management applications.
  • Optics Housing Machining: We manufacture ultra-precise optics housings for sensitive sensors and imaging equipment to customer dimensional and material requirements.
  • Spacecraft Radiators and Thermal Panels: Manufactured to customer specifications for demanding thermal management applications in vacuum environments.
  • Pocketed Heat Sinks: Manufactured to customer specifications with lightweight features and complex geometries for demanding thermal management applications.
  • Advanced Materials: Experience machining materials such as Invar (for low thermal expansion) and Titanium (for strength-to-weight performance).

Strategic Investment in Advanced Technology

Oberg continues to invest in advanced 5-axis machining for satellite hardware to support complex, precision-critical components. Our newest equipment expansions provide the capacity and precision required for the next generation of space exploration.

High-Precision Multi-Axis Platforms

  • Grob G550: This 5-axis machining platform, installed in early 2025, features a 24.8 in x 24.8 in pallet capability and a 13-station changer. It supports complex geometries and improved process control on demanding machined components while reducing handling.
  • DMG 210 Portal: A major differentiator for large-format precision machining for space hardware. With a massive 82 in x 82 in x 49 in work envelope and 183-tool capacity, it allows Oberg to machine large-scale space structures, housings, and fixtures without sacrificing precision, achieving tolerances as tight as 0.0002 in to 0.0005 in (application dependent).
  • Makino a120nx: A heavy-duty, high-precision, horizontal machining platform designed for the extreme precision and massive scale required in space exploration and satellite manufacturing. Accommodates workpieces up to 82.7 in x 70.9 in tall and an 11,000 lb. pallet capacity. The new Makino a120nx allows Oberg to machine hard metals that handle thermal structural loads, such as Titanium, Inconel, and Stainless Steel with precision.

Large-Format Metrology

  • Global Advantage CMM: Our advanced precision inspection for large aerospace parts is anchored by this CMM, featuring an envelope of approximately 78.7 in x 129.9 in x 59 in. With thermal compensation and active vibration isolation, it supports accurate dimensional validation and alignment-critical inspection for large space hardware.

Inspection, Quality, and Compliance

Space customers expect disciplined quality systems and rigorous inspection. Oberg meets these expectations through a culture of controlled processes and documentation excellence.

  • Advanced Inspection: Utilizing CMM, non-contact laser scanning, vision systems, and in-process probing to validate tight-tolerance thermal features.
  • Traceability: We provide full data packages including First Article Documentation, material traceability, and strict revision control.
  • Certifications and Registration: Oberg operates under AS9100 Rev. D and ISO 9001:2015 certified quality systems and is ITAR registered.

The Oberg Space Advantage

Oberg combines heritage craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to offer prototype-to-production space hardware manufacturing. Oberg has manufactured components and equipment used in space-related applications, including hardware that has gone to space and returned.

  • Build-to-Print Manufacturing & DFM Support: We are well-positioned for both traditional build-to-print manufacturing and collaborative DFM (Design for Manufacturing) support during new product introduction (NPI).
  • EDM for Aerospace and Space Components: Our electrical-discharge-machining capabilities create fine internal details and features in hardened materials.
  • Vertically Integrated: Reducing supplier risk and ensuring consistency from prototype through production.
  • Apprentice-Trained Workforce: We deliver craftsmanship vital for mission-critical applications.
