Process: 3- and 5-axis Machining and EDM
Complex Orthopaedic Instruments — Made Fast. Made Right.
A leading company in joint replacement orthopaedics asked Oberg to supply a set of instruments used in their replacement knee system. These instrument assemblies were one of their most difficult sets to manufacture. Since the instruments were needed to meet a critical surgery date of a high profile surgeon, the deadline was firm.
Within hours of receiving the order, Oberg’s creative manufacturing team had developed specialized 5-axis machining and “extreme angle” wire EDM programs to produce these components. Special work holding fixtures were developed for common use throughout the manufacturing and inspection process to minimize part handling and maximize dimensional accuracy. Laser welding and passivation were also used to manufacture the instruments.
The entire set of eight instrument assemblies were delivered in only 10 days. “The quality and delivery of the assemblies was exceptional and your talented manufacturing team exceeded our expectations”, stated our customer. As a result of Oberg’s performance, this surgeon had an easier time performing a successful surgery and the OEM has awarded us with additional business.
